Carbon fiber is extremely strong. It is typical in engineering to measure the benefit of a material in terms of strength to weight ratio and stiffness to weight ratio, particularly in structural design, where added weight may translate into increased lifecycle costs or unsatisfactory performance.
Carbon fiber is 10x stronger than steel and 8x stronger than aluminum in spite of the fact that it is also much lighter than both.
Manufacturers commonly use silicone elastomers as flexible coating systems for technical textiles. They usually do not desire the grip or high-friction properties of silicone coatings in their current products, but in the case of the Shield it proves advantageous.
